How We Got Here
Article by Kathy Herfel*
Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish began in 1896 when Fr. Edward P. O'Toole came from West Superior to build a church in Mondovi. The church was built at the cost of around $5,000 on an acre of land donated by Jacob Canar, and was dedicated on December 17, 1896 by Bishop Schwebach. From 1881 to 1896 Catholic in this area worshiped in private homes and at St. Patrick's Church, about five miles west of Mondovi. St. Patrick's was a mission church built in 1871, serving the Eau Galle, Durand, and Mondovi areas. Only the cemetery on County Rd. A remains. The current cemetery under the care of the Sacred Heart Cemetery Association lies east of Mondovi on Highway 10.
In 1911, during the tenure of Fr. A.J. Hovorka, the parochial school was constructed. Sisters of the Third Order of St. Frances of Perpetual Adoration were placed in charge. In 1972 the rectory was built by the men of the parish.
In 1951 plans began for the construction of a new church. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on August 8, 1954 and the cornerstone laid on October 17. The first Mass was celebrated on May 15, 1955. Dedication was held on Sunday, May 22 by Bishop Treacy. The present church, built at the cost of about $125,000, is colonial style with seating for about 450. The new organ was purchased by the Catholic Youth Organization and the school children. The school children also furnished the baptismal font, and the altar was purchased by the Altar and Rosary Society of the parish.
The parish celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Sunday, August 17, 1947 with a Pontifical Mass. Bishop Treacy and Mondovi Mayor Grover Broadfoot were guest speakers.
From about 1920 to 1950 the school was closed. During that time, the building was leased to the Mondovi Public School System. The school reopened in 1951 and the 1950s and 1960s saw a peak enrollment of over 100 students in grades 1-8. In 1977, under Fr. Bernard Raschke the school was reduced to grades 1-6. In 1989 Kindergarten was added by Fr. William Blazcewicz. The school closed again in 2000. The building is now used for faith formation classes and other needs of the parish.
